The Sydney Morning Herald reports on insights from Pathology Update 2018

Dr Jovanka King spoke at the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia's (RCPA) annual conference, Pathology Update, A Bridge to the Future, on 2 March 2018 in Sydney.  Dr King, a paediatric immunologist,  explained why she is calling for newborn screening to be expanded to include testing for severe forms of primary immunodeficiency diseases, in particular SCID.  If detected early enough, can be cured by a bone marrow or stem cell transplant.  This year, the RCPA's Pathology Update conference hosted international and local speakers and attracted 1,3226 delegates.  Read more on Dr King's work in The Sydney Morning Herald.

 
 

Conde Nast Traveler's readers say the Philippines has the best islands in the world!

The Philippines dominated the Conde Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards in the publication’s list of best islands, with Boracay, Cebu and Visayan Islands, and Palawan taking out the top three positions.

“Boracay, Cebu and Palawan are three fantastic examples of our 7107 islands in the Philippines,” says Tourism Attache at Philippines Department of Tourism Australia and New Zealand, Norjamin Delos Reyes.

Liam Twomey headed to Disneyland Resort in Los Angeles to explore the park's newest attraction, Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout.  Liam said, "I'm strapped into a seat looking for something to grab hold of.  My heart starts to beat a little faster.  I can guess what is coming next.  But while I'm taking a few deep breaths, I'm suddenly distracted by a classic tune.  Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benatar starts blaring through the speakers."  Read more at Escape.  

Genetic testing for patients with high risk of breast, ovarian cancer are now free

The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia's genetic's advisory chair, Dr Melody Caramins, said making the tests free marks a 'huge milestone' and will significantly improve the lives of many Australians.

Dr Melody Caramins (above speaking live on Sky News) said, for those with hereditary mutations predisposing to breast and/or ovarian cancer, they would now have access to genetic testing for free.  Read more on The Sydney Morning Herald.

He said, "Crossing a rusty iron bridge enveloped by twisted vines, my first glimpse of the Na'vi World has me gaping in awe.  An elaborate installation of the floating mountains of Mo'ara peak at 130 metres above the valley floor.                                                                                                                                      

"Tree roots and waterfalls cascade from the mountains' sheer rock faces while all around me the landscape teems with bizarre plant life - some real, some not - more then 250 varieties of live trees and plants have been interspersed with man-made Pandoran plants."
